Is collagen absorbed or digested in the stomach?

The absorption of regular collagen is very limited because digestion of this type of collagen is limited due to lack of an enzyme called collagenase. Only about 2 to 4% of it are digested. Non-hydrolysed collagen should not be recommended as it is practically indigestible for humans. Such collagen is used as a filler into cheap meat products.

When buying collagen, it is important to pay attention to its origin and to check if it is a HYDROLYSATE, because only this one can be absorbed effectively (95%) in the small intestine.
